| GREETINGS TO ALL THE GUESTS OF MY
HOME PAGE |
|
My name is Aldis Abolins, and
this is my personal home page which is devoted to masters’
swimming in Latvia.
I’ve been thinking of making a home page for quite some time.
For many years in the past.
I „was away” from swimming. Just now and then
watched some swimming competition broadcasts on TV.
In 2000 I took my
son to Riga Specialized Swimming School, to the coach Anita Rudzite. I
spent my son’s first training season in the NBS swimming pool
mostly as a viewer in the stands and tried out the water just several
times. And I enjoyed it!
In the summer of 2001, after a 16-year long
break, I first got off the mark in masters’ competitions in
Daugavpils. In the spring of 2002, while preparing for Valmiera
masters’ competitions „Second wind”, I
took up training on a more or less regular basis.

When I started
taking interest in masters’ achievements, records and success
stories it turned out that in Latvia you practically couldn’t
find that kind of information. In 2005, after the current
„Second wind” competitions in Valmiera, I got the
minutes of the results of competitions from the then
„AQUA” club president Ilze Butina. That gave rise
to the formation of masters’ statistics. This process seemed
interesting to me, and I understood – if this information is
not saved it will be lost forever.
That is why I have started this home page -because I have collected
quite a lot of information about the results of our swimmers, and I
want to share it with you. I am doing it also in order to unite all
those who once were engaged in swimming sports and achieved great or
not so great success and those who are in serious training now, as well
as those who have practised swimming just for fun and those who have
regularly attended doctor-recommended treatment classes in swimming,
and those who... no matter what! If you are fond of swimming, on my
home page you will find information about competitions, results,
different ratings and records, you will be able to see picture
galleries of swimming competitions and read current news referring to
masters’ swimming.
In Latvia, swimming as sports is not among the most popular kinds.
Unfortunately. But I hope that this attitude is just temporary. On the
other hand, perhaps it is hard to compete with sports games, like
basketball, football, hockey... But then again, swimming as a leisure
activity occupies one of the leading positions. Year after year,
masters’ swimming has been gaining more and more ground in
the world - the unbelievably great number of participants in world and
European championships is indicative of that. It means that here in
Latvia, we ourselves should be more active in participating and
promoting masters’ sports!
October 20th,
2008.
